Applications are invited for the post of a in the Department of Philosophy, working with Prof. Dr. Klaus Corcilius and with Prof. Dr. Heidrun Eichner from the Department of Oriental and Islamic Studies. This vacancy is connected to the award of an ERC Advanced Grant, entitled "TIDA – Text and Idea of Aristotle's Science of Living Things", for the period 2022-27. The project will be based at the University of Tübingen. In total, the group will consist of five postdoctoral researchers, one PhD student, student assistants, and academic guest researchers. See the project homepage.The principal activity of the postdoctoral researcher will be to undertake research in the textual tradition of the Arabic translation of Aristotle's De anima in order to provide material for a critical edition of the Greek text. This includes the evaluation of texts in Hebrew and Latin.A solid background and experience, including a PhD in a relevant discipline, is required: Textual transmission, edition of texts, and textual criticism Good command of two or more languages involved in the transmission (Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Latin) Familiarity with the reception of Ancient Philosophy in the Islamicate world Experience in all these areas would be ideal; otherwise the successful applicant is expected to actively engage in the collaborative efforts of the project and to acquire the necessary skills.The successful applicant is expected to actively engage with experts in the Greek textual tradition of the De anima and to actively engage in the collaborative efforts of the project.The University of Tübingen and in particular the Tübingen Department of Philosophy and the Department of Oriental and Islamic Studies offer a stimulating research environment. The period of employment will be for 2 years, beginning in January 2023. The holder of the position will be subject to an interim evaluation after 12 months.
